This delicious and crispy Fried Fish Sandwich is a “healthier” take on your Friday fish-fry. A simple fish patty with a dollop of tartar sauce and a slice of cheese sandwiched between soft buns. This version skips the heavy batter and spends less time in the oil. In classic fashion, a crunchy, zesty mayo-based tartar sauce perfectly balances the fish. To finish, top with crispy shoestring french fries.
Tartar Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayo/ or yogurt
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 2 tablespoons chopped Bread & Butter Pickle Chips
- 1 teaspoon Bread & Butter Chips brine
- salt and pepper to taste
Fish
- 1-2 tilapia filets, trimmed into 2 squares (or halibut, cod, grouper, haddock )
- salt and freshly ground pepper
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup panko
- oil, I used grapeseed due to it’s high smoke point
- 2 slices American cheese
- 2 soft buns
- 2 tablespoons Homemade Tartar Sauce
- 1 cup matchstick french fries
Make the tartar sauce: Stir together all of the Tartar sauce ingredients and set aside.
Season both sides of the filets with salt and pepper. Lightly dust with flour, then dip into the egg and then the panko, pressing to make sure the crumbs adhere.
Heat up a bit of oil over medium high heat. When hot and shimmery, add the fish and cook until golden brown, crisp and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove from the pan and top each fish patty with a slice of cheese. Spread tartar sauce on the top bun. Place the fish patty on the bottom bun and top with the fries. Serve.
